I became entirely convinced of the benefits of the Homeopathic approach, after receiving effective treatment for a long-standing complaint that had resisted all other attempts to heal. My growing interest in homeopathy led me to give up my life as a committed nursery teacher and re-train at The College of Homeopathy in London. I graduated in 2001 and joined the Register of the Society of Homeopaths in 2003.

What is Homeopathy?

Homeopathy is a holistic system of medicine. It is safe and gentle, yet profoundly effective, working by stimulating the body's natural ability to heal itself. Homeopathy recognises that all symptoms of ill health are expressions of imbalance within the whole person. It was developed in 1796 by a German doctor called Samuel Hahnemann. Working from the Hippocratic principle of treating 'like with like' he discovered that substances, such as poisons, which are harmful in large doses become curative when used in tiny doses. This principle became the basis for the development of the healing remedies that homeopaths prescribe today. The remedies are made from a variety of different substances including plant, mineral, animal, metals and acids.

What will the treatment be like?

The remedy is usually given in the form of little sugar pills, although remedies in liquid form are quite often given, You will be advised to keep a clean mouth for about 20 minutes before and after taking the remedy. You may also be advised to avoid coffee and peppermint as these substances can sometimes interfere with the action of the remedy. All the information you will need regarding how and when to take the remedy will be given at the time of the first consultation. It is possible that after taking the remedy you may notice some changes; patients have reported a period of exceptional well-being, while others have noticed an increase in symptoms for a short while. These are good indications that the remedy is taking effect.

Visiting a Homeopath

The homeopathic process is a co-operative effort and in order to find the right remedy I will need to find out a lot about you. At the initial consultation I will take a detailed case history to assess the nature of your symptoms and how they affect you. I will also ask you questions about your general health, your life and about the health of your family past and present. Anything you say will be treated in the strictest confidence. The initial consultation usually lasts up to 1½ hours. Your remedy may not be given to you at the consultation but be ready for collection or posting once I have worked the case. The second session is generally is generally 2-6 weeks after the first and lasts about 40 minutes. Intervals between treatments and the duration of treatment will vary depending on your individual progress and the nature of the complaint.
