What is Osteopathy?
Osteopathy is a hands on system that
enables the osteopath to assess, diagnose and treat problems by using
articulatory movements and, if necessary, adjustments. It does not involve the
use of any mechanical devices and is non- invasive.
What will my
treatment involve?
Your initial appointment will last up to
an hour. You will be asked about the problem you have as well as being taken
through your medical history. This allows the osteopath to look at previous
problems which may have led to your current condition.
As the area that is causing you
discomfort may not be the origin of the problem, we ask you to undress to your
underwear. We appreciate that not everybody is comfortable with this, and if
this is the case please wear loose fitting clothes that will allow free
movement; we will however need to see the spine and the problem area at the
beginning and end of each session.
You will be examined and any tests that
need to be carried out will be done before the treatment commences. Treatment
usually involves a series of articulatory movements. If you have any problem
with lying on your back or front, please advise us so that we can accommodate
for this in the plan. You will be talked through your personal plan and asked
to sign a consent form before we commence treatment.
It is very important that you relax as
much as you can. If any bony adjustments are to be made, we will talk you
through them before carrying them out. If you find anything uncomfortable,
please let us know so that we can work around the problem.
Will I need to
bring anything?
Please provide us with details of any
medication you are taking. If you have x-rays or x-ray results then these would
also be helpful.
What happens after
treatment?
You will be advised whether to exercise
or rest. It is important to follow these instructions as they will speed up
your recovery.
Following treatment some people feel an initial sense of euphoria; others feel relaxed and tired. Occasionally you may find that the discomfort does not seem to be relieved or it may even become more intense. This is quite natural and usually calms after 24-48 hours. However, should this not be the case always contact the clinic so that we can discuss and review your problem. Initially it may be necessary to have more than one session a week. We offer a discount for the second treatment in any one week.
